Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we have earwax? What does it do?

Earwax is natural and important. It helps:

  • protect the ear canal from dust and bacteria

  • keep the skin inside the ear healthy

  • trap small particles before they reach the eardrum

Earwax only becomes a problem when it builds up and blocks the ear canal, which is common in older adults.

Why do care-home residents get earwax blockage more often?

Earwax builds up more easily in older people because:

  • the wax becomes drier and harder with age

  • hearing aids can push wax deeper into the ear

  • reduced jaw movement affects natural wax clearance

This is why regular ear care is often needed in care homes.

How is earwax removed?

We usually remove earwax using microsuction, a gentle and widely used method in the UK.
It allows us to see clearly inside the ear and remove wax safely, stopping at any time if the resident becomes uncomfortable.

Is microsuction safe?

Yes, when carried out by a trained professional.
Microsuction is considered one of the safest methods of earwax removal because:

  • it is done under direct vision

  • no water is put into the ear

  • it can be stopped immediately if needed

Resident comfort and safety always come first.

What is involved in a microsuction appointment?

During the visit:

  • the ear is examined with a light or camera

  • microsuction is used to gently remove wax

  • we stop if the resident feels uncomfortable

  • aftercare advice is given if needed

Appointments are calm, unhurried, and adapted for very elderly residents.

Do ear drops or softeners need to be used first?

Yes, in many cases.
Using earwax-softening drops (such as olive oil or a recommended softener) for several days before treatment:

  • softens hard wax

  • reduces discomfort

  • improves the chance of success in one visit

Clear instructions will be provided.

Is earwax always removed in one visit?

Not always.
Very hard or long-standing earwax may need to be removed over more than one visit.
This is safer than forcing removal in a single session.

What if earwax cannot be safely removed?

If earwax is too hard, too deep, or medically complex, we may recommend:

  • further softening and another visit, or

  • referral to a private ENT specialist for removal

This is done to protect the ear and avoid complications.

Can I remove earwax myself or help my relative do it?

We do not recommend trying to remove earwax yourself.

Cotton buds, ear candles, and home tools can:

  • push wax deeper

  • damage the ear canal

  • cause infection or injury

Using ear drops to soften wax is usually safe, but removal should be done by a trained professional.

Is earwax removal discounted under the membership?

No.
Earwax removal is included as part of a hearing care plan, not discounted.
The plan covers regular care, monitoring, and follow-up rather than reduced-price procedures.

Why is there a minimum 6-month commitment?

Earwax and hearing problems are usually ongoing.
A minimum 6-month commitment allows regular care and follow-up, which leads to better comfort, hearing, and long-term outcomes.
